    Polarimetric properties of indoor MIMO channels for different floor levels in a residential house

    This paper analyzes polarimetric characteristics of power delay profiles (PDPs), cross polarization discrimination (XPD), and received power of specular and diffuse multipath components of indoor MIMO radio channels at 2.45 GHz. Measurements were done in a residential house at two floors levels: "same floor" and "cross floor". Variations of 5 to 15 dB in PDPs between co-and cross-polar links were found in the same floor level; however these changes decrease as radio links move from line-of-sight to non-line-of-sight propagations. XPDs of radio waves were found to be higher for cross floor configuration, about 5 dB in horizontally and 7 dB in vertically polarized waves. Also, diffuse components of channels were less affected compared to that of specular components in same floor setups for cross-polar links. Our results demonstrate that the contribution of diffuse components to total channel power is higher than previously presented studies for large industrial indoor environments

    Simulation of ion behavior in an open three-dimensional Paul trap using a power series method

    Simulations of the dynamics of ions trapped in a Paul trap with terms in the potential up to the order 10 have been carried out. The power series method is used to solve numerically the equations of motion of the ions. The stability diagram has been studied and the buffer gas cooling has been implemented by a Monte Carlo method. The dipole excitation was also included. The method has been applied to an existing trap and it has shown good agreement with the experimental results and previous simulations using other methods

    Robustness of high-resolution channel parameter estimators in presence of dense multipath components

    The estimation accuracy of specular multipath components in radio channels that include dense multipath is investigated. Classical multipath estimation algorithms such as ESPRIT and SAGE do not include dense multipath in their signal model whereas recent ones, such as RiMAX, do. These estimation algorithms are applied to a priori known synthetic channels which include both specular components (SCs) and dense multipath components (DMCs). The estimation errors of the SCs are computed as a function of the DMC power to evaluate the estimator's robustness. The results of this work clearly indicate large estimation errors for the SC parameters when the estimator does not include DMCs in its data model

    Statistics of multipath component clustering in an office environment

    In this paper, directional MIMO measurements in an indoor office environment are presented. A 5-D ESPRIT estimation algorithm is used to extract parameters associated with discrete propagation paths, such as their azimuth of arrival, azimuth of departure, delay, and power. The estimated path parameters are grouped into clusters using the statistical K-power-means algorithm. Statistical distributions are determined for the path parameters within individual clusters and for their change between clusters. To validate the distributional choices, the goodness-of-fit to the proposed distributions is verified using statistical hypothesis tests with sufficient power

    Identification of Immunogenic Proteins of Waddlia chondrophila

    Evidence is growing for a role of Waddlia chondrophila as an agent of adverse pregnancy outcomes in both humans and ruminants. This emerging pathogen, member of the order Chlamydiales, is also implicated in bronchiolitis and lower respiratory tract infections. Until now, the serological diagnosis of W. chondrophila infection has mainly relied on manually intensive tests including micro-immunofluorescence and Western blotting. Thus, there is an urgent need to establish reliable high throughput serological assays. Using a combined genomic and proteomic approach, we detected 57 immunogenic proteins of W. chondrophila, of which 17 were analysed by mass spectrometry. Two novel hypothetical proteins, Wim3 and Wim4, were expressed as recombinant proteins in Escherichia coli, purified and used as antigens in an ELISA test. Both proteins were recognized by sera of rabbits immunized with W. chondrophila as well as by human W. chondrophila positive sera but not by rabbit pre-immune sera nor human W. chondrophila negative sera. These results demonstrated that the approach chosen is suitable to identify immunogenic proteins that can be used to develop a serological test. This latter will be a valuable tool to further clarify the pathogenic potential of W. chondrophila

    The value of source data verification in a cancer clinical trial

    Background Source data verification (SDV) is a resource intensive method of quality assurance frequently used in clinical trials. There is no empirical evidence to suggest that SDV would impact on comparative treatment effect results from a clinical trial. Methods Data discrepancies and comparative treatment effects obtained following 100% SDV were compared to those based on data without SDV. Overall survival (OS) and Progression-free survival (PFS) were compared using Kaplan-Meier curves, log-rank tests and Cox models. Tumour response classifications and comparative treatment Odds Ratios (ORs) for the outcome objective response rate, and number of Serious Adverse Events (SAEs) were compared. OS estimates based on SDV data were compared against estimates obtained from centrally monitored data. Findings Data discrepancies were identified between different monitoring procedures for the majority of variables examined, with some variation in discrepancy rates. There were no systematic patterns to discrepancies and their impact was negligible on OS, the primary outcome of the trial (HR (95% CI): 1.18(0.99 to 1.41), p = 0.064 with 100% SDV; 1.18(0.99 to 1.42), p = 0.068 without SDV; 1.18(0.99 to 1.40), p = 0.073 with central monitoring). Results were similar for PFS. More extreme discrepancies were found for the subjective outcome overall objective response (OR (95% CI): 1.67(1.04 to 2.68), p = 0.03 with 100% SDV; 2.45(1.49 to 4.04), p = 0.0003 without any SDV) which was mostly due to differing CT scans. Interpretation Quality assurance methods used in clinical trials should be informed by empirical evidence. In this empirical comparison, SDV was expensive and identified random errors that made little impact on results and clinical conclusions of the trial. Central monitoring using an external data source was a more efficient approach for the primary outcome of OS. For the subjective outcome objective response, an independent blinded review committee and tracking system to monitor missing scan data could be more efficient than SDV

    Variational approach to a class of nonlinear oscillators with several limit cycles

    We study limit cycles of nonlinear oscillators described by the equation x¨+νF(x˙)+x=0\ddot x + \nu F(\dot x) + x =0. Depending on the nonlinearity this equation may exhibit different number of limit cycles. We show that limit cycles correspond to relative extrema of a certain functional. Analytical results in the limits ν>0\nu ->0 and ν>\nu -> \infty are in agreement with previously known criteria. For intermediate ν\nu numerical determination of the limit cycles can be obtained.Comment: 12 pages, 3 figure

    Weak Interaction Studies with 6He

    The 6He nucleus is an ideal candidate to study the weak interaction. To this end we have built a high-intensity source of 6He delivering ~10^10 atoms/s to experiments. Taking full advantage of that available intensity we have performed a high-precision measurement of the 6He half-life that directly probes the axial part of the nuclear Hamiltonian.     Paul trapping of radioactive 6He+ions and direct observation of their beta-decay

    We demonstrate that abundant quantities of short-lived beta unstable ions can be trapped in a novel transparent Paul trap and that their decay products can directly be detected in coincidence. Low energy 6He+ (807 ms half-life) ions were extracted from the SPIRAL source at GANIL, then decelerated, cooled and bunched by means of the buffer gas cooling technique. More than 10^8 ions have been stored over a measuring period of six days and about 10^5 decay coincidences between the beta particles and the 6Li^{++} recoiling ions have been recorded. The technique can be extended to other short-lived species, opening new possibilities for trap assisted decay experiments.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, submitted to Phys.Rev.Let
